Itch, Itch and more Itch

Re: Itch, Itch, Itch

///////////////////////////////////////////////////

Hi to you this Friday!

First THANKS for all of your input from yesterday's
question-

I think I will go and be interviewed on T.V.- pretty
much all of you think it's a good idea. :-)

-------------
Itching
-------------

Allergies

Oh so common, especially this time of year.

I wanted to give you some NON steroid options,
and a new tweak on an old one..

TO THE BATH. An oatmeal shampoo with cool water
will ease the itchiest skin. Leave the shampoo
on for 10 minutes then rinse well. With the
most severe allergies, bathe your pet twice
weekly.

SOOTHE IT TOPICALLY. Calendula ointment is a
herbal medication that has been successfully
used to relieve the itch. Apply a thin coat
twice daily to affected areas.

ANTIHISTAMINES. Benadryl is the most commonly
used antihistamine. It is give at a dose of
1 mg per pound of body weight, 2-3 times a day.
Cats respond well to Chlortripolon at 2 mg,
2-3 times a day. It is best to consult your
veterinarian before using these medications.
It often takes 14 days of using these to see
if they are helping.

ANTIOXIDANTS. Vitamin E and Vitamin C may help:
the Vitamin E dose is 100 IU per 10 lbs of
body weight once daily; the Vitamin C dose is
100 mg per 10 lbs of body weight once daily.

-------------------------------
And a modified NEW dose:
-------------------------------

THE SUPPLEMENT CONNECTION. Fatty Acid supplements
are very helpful in decreasing the level of
inflammation. Omega 3 fatty acids are most
important.

The IMPORTANT thing here is to have a CORRECT
dose of the fatty acids, specifically the
anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and
EPA.

You actually need 180mg of EPA per 10lbs.

To get these high levels here is a good rule
of thumb:

1000mg of fish oil per 10lbs daily.

Dogs also respond well to Flax oil, which is
far less expensive, and it can be given at
1 teaspoon per 10lbs daily

That is often 5 times the 'label' dose on
many bottles.

So CHECK your bottles, and UP the dose to
have a less itchy and happier pet..
